Military issue Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV)
The US Army Generation 2 (Gen II) Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV) is a modular body armor carrier introduced to succeed the Gen 1, offering improved weight distribution, a single-stage quick-release system, and enhanced coverage. It features integrated side plate carriers, an internal cummerbund to shift weight from shoulders to hips, and enhanced soft armor. Issued in UCP or OCP pattern.
Key Features and Improvements
- Weight Reduction: Over three pounds lighter than the original Interceptor OTV.
- Enhanced Coverage: Includes a lower back protector, providing 52 square inches more coverage.
- Quick Release System: A single-stage pull tab on the front allows for rapid removal in emergencies.
- Improved Fit & Mobility: Redesigned yoke/collar, integrated side plate pockets, and an internal elastic waistband for better, more comfortable wear.
- Modularity: Features extensive MOLLE PALS attachment points for pouches, with optional components including groin, deltoid, and neck/collar protection.
- Sizing: Expanded to 11 sizes (including long variants) for a better fit.
Gen II vs. Other Generations
- vs. Gen 1: The Gen II improved upon the initial design with a more reliable and simpler single-stage quick-release system and refined coverage areas.
- vs. Gen 3: Gen III (introduced around 2014) further improved the quick-release system, reducing reassembly time significantly, and was designed to better accommodate female soldiers.

Plate carriers such as this are compatible with ballistic plates of matching size, i.e. a size medium vest will generally work best with size medium plates. For vests that include soft armor, ICW plates can be used to minimize weight.
